SubjectSRAM and MMC1

Hi,
Why does Metroid write to SRAM even though there is no SRAM? If I don't support this, then Metroid won't work correctly. Is there an "official" rule when to ignore SRAM reads/writes? (other than by the lack of sram)

Anybody around when the first NES emulators started to appear? What were they called? Was Nesticle first? Is there a site I can read about them?

Thanks
