Using the new nesparallel technology :),
I would imagine it's possible to circumvent the whole midi spheal using a vst plug coded to access the parallel port directly, this way I would imagine a better clock responce than midi, and all the midi handling could be managed in an external sequencer - well as long as the hoast app was not taxing the system causing the link to error out

might be worth taking a look at cutting midi out of the picture with this awesome adaptor you've been working on with sepi

Parallel ports must die.

Do you have any idea of how hard it is to build a USB device? You won't get away without using a dedicated chip + a microcontroller. The parallel port may be old and not work on new OSes without hack drivers, but it still has it's good uses since it's about 100 times easier than using the USB port. For people without lots of experience in EE who are trying to build their own hardware for interfacing to old consoles, that matters a lot.

Is it easy to get parallel port peripherals to work with a parallel to USB adapter?

Something like this makes USB look kinda managable:

But it's not cheap.. $50 (Aus.) for the board pictured there.

Yes. Even single-bit read/writes (SPP) work with these controllers.

As I said -- parallel ports must die.
