Subjectmegaman 1 from rom image and onto a cartridge via eprom/eeprom new

megaman 1, the original i use to have it but lost it, and i wish i still had it. the only way of getting it now would be program it into eeproms/eproms on an existing card i have of the same type, but my problem is what was its type? and how hard would it be to program megaman 1 into the eproms? and how would i go about it?

i have a friend who has a eeprom programer/burner and uv eraser for eproms and an abundance of eproms/eeproms.

also could i also do this with megaman 4 and 5 as i have never really played these on a nes before, i have a top loader nes so butchering a cart doesnt matter so much. and if it is possible to put a megaman image onto a cart what else could also go onto that cartridge if i wanted to flash it and change games on the cart?

I looked briefly at the roms, and they all have different setups except for Megaman 4 and 6. Megaman 1 is a UNROM game (iNES mapper #2), so it wouldn't be too hard because there'd be only one socket to rewire. (UNROM never has CHR-ROM). And the cartridge would be able to run any UNROM game that's 128k or less.

Megaman is actually really easy to find, at least where I live. It's just relatively expensive at $15 or more.

<nitpick>
All UNROM games are 128KB or less.
The 256KB ones use the UOROM board.
</nitpick>

what other carts are uniroms? would super mario bros (the original) be an ok cart to butcher?, i have a numer of these carts so losing one is no worry, i also have a game called red riding hood (third party cart made in australia) which has been setup with the same design inside it as a super mario bros cart but it already has a eprom on the cart, and one normal rom, how do i know what games i have are on unirom carts? and why do some have 32pin roms mixed with 28pin roms and some are 28pin and 28pin? what game cart could i butcher and put megaman 4 and five onto? are 28c256 eeproms or 27c256 eproms suitable for putting megaman onto? or are 27c512 eproms suitable? because i have a few of these or should i go smaller and get some 128k eproms/eeproms?

heres another reply, im just impatient oh and i forgot a few things in the last reply, in australia, its hard to find nes hardware anymore as well as cartridges, and megaman is a rarity, i just found megaman x2 for the snes in sydney a while back for $70 dollars! thats just blind robbery, but i got it anyway. megaman 1 im guessing if i did find it again would be around the same price, this is why i hope/plead with anyone to tell me how i can get this game from image to a cartridge, all i need to know now is what other carts use the unrom design, insted of tearing apart all my carts to find one i would like to know what to look for. the red riding hood game i have that is a third party cart is a little diffent to the original super mario cart i have in that its only visable difference in design is that instead of the chip saying nintendo on it next to the roms on the left hand side of the cart there is a funny looking blue thing which im guessing is someones bypassing of nintendo's lockout chip that stopped 3rd party cart manufacturers from making such games, and that it already has an eprom in it makes it a handy little cart, but what is it? i just had a look at it and it has none of the nintendo lettering on it(not that i expected any, i was wrong about it before it has two eproms on it, one with a little glass window and one without, different speeds and different manufacturers, theres also a soldered wire on the back and a resistor weirdly soldered on the front attaching their lockout chip thingy to the first goldfinger at the bottom the eproms are 27c64-20 for the chr rom and 27c256 for the prg rom, the super mario bros cart is a 256nrom is that the same as a 256unrom? the red riding hood game was made by home entertainment suppliers australia so most likely noone else in the world could have one of these but maybe something similar... if this is a unrom, is it suitable for megaman 1? or any unrom game? there we go got it all out of my head hehehe any help for this dribble would be so appreciated!!!
thanks guys and gals

You could use the info on this site to find out what board types the games you have are using.
http://www.parodius.com/~veilleux/

NROM carts have no memory mapper, and use the NES's size limitation of 32K PRG and 8K CHR. I took a quick look at Little Red Hood .nes file, and it looks like it doesn't use a mapper either.

it seems i dont have any unrom carts in my possesion, can an nrom cart work for megaman 1 you think? or should i try the red riding hood cart? the red riding hood cart has two flashroms on it though.... hmmmmmmm

i guess i could go down to the 2nd hand dealer and pick up some crappy unrom cart and use it but thats a last resort... does anyone know any games that are unrom that i could look for? also another question, ive been told by a few sources now that eeproms wont work on a nes cart why is that so? and that eproms are the way to go. dont eproms and eeproms have the same pinouts and the same sizes 64k 128k 256k 512k? only that they are flashable is the difference.. or is it in the bank switching and such.. any help would be appreciated sanx guys and gals, also what pins would i have to rewire and such when i actually get down to the nitty gritty?

Looks like you'll have to get a UNROM cart then. NROM carts lack any form of bankswitching. Any .NES file that is 40k or 24k is usually NROM.

EEPROMs do work on NES carts, but there are some dis/advantages. EPROMs can be up to 4 megabytes, but I think the largest EEPROMs are 64k. Data on EPROMs theoritically would have a longer life-span also, I think around 20 years if it's kept well (no UV light reaching the window). EEPROMs are easily erased, which makes them good for quickly developing/testing small programs.

Check out Siudym's cartridge pinouts on this site (in the Cartridge hardware section towards the bottom), I think he might've made a pinout for Nintendo's 128k ROMs. You'd need to compare that info to the pinout for a 128k EPROM to find out what needs rewired exactly. This is info that this site is seriously lacking.

would a 27c256 eprom be adaquate/overkill to put megaman 1 onto? i have some unrom carts now, i found a list of carts and rom types and found some crappy games today from that list which i can use ya!!!!
anyhoo now i have the dilema of the pinouts, i cant find Siudym's cartridge pinouts i must have missed it while scanning through all the other bits and pieces on the site, can ya give me a link to it? sanx

its only a matter of time now before i spend 24/7 playing megaman 1 again ya!!!!! sanx again you have been so much help.

hey do you know the difference between an anrom cart and an unrom cart, they look vertually identical, though it looks like the anrom design was not used to often only a few games list as having used that design in the list i have but the list i have doesnt have all the games ever made for the nes on it just american ones mainly and pirate ones and third party. sanx again

It's a UNROM board, too.
