I need to turn off my ninja character once I enter the battle screen so you can't see him.

I thought at first that you just change the sprite's special byte so that he is drawn behind the background, but I did that and when I try to draw another sprite in the same spot (the monster), I see the shape of the original sprite in the backgrounds colors (solid black) right in the middle of the monster.

Is there a better way to turn sprites off and on?
