We do all have a standard OS. It's called ANSI C. Even if that doesn't count, there's the POSIX standard. Yes, I know Microsoft's operating system doesn't implement POSIX well if at all.

So supplement ANSI with something like wxWidgets or the Allegro library <http://alleg.sourceforge.net/>, as I did for a set of tools that includes an alternative to NSA.
